AB OBJECTIVE: We have previously described (9th International AIDS
conference, 1993) an increased incidence of HIV EIA positive
indeterminate Western Blot (IWB) in 17 out 520 hemodialysis patients
(HDP). We now compare HDP with IWB which did not become positive WB
during a three-year follow up and HDP without IWB to determine whether
any differences may be found between the two groups. METHODS: Seventeen
HDP with IWB (Pasteur), Group 1, were compared to 42 other HDP, Group 2,
with respect to demographic data, blood groups, duration, blood
transfusions and HBV serology. Statistical analysis was performed using
the T-test and chi-square method. RESULTS: The average number of blood
transfusions was significantly higher in Group 1 HDP, 10.7 versus 1.6 in
the control group (p < 0.02). Seven of Group 1 had undergone rejection
following a renal transplant in contrast to two of Group 2 HDP (p <
0.002). Six of Group 1 in contrast to two of Group 2 HDP were Rh
negative (p < 0.01). There were no significant differences with respect
to sex, country of origin, duration of dialysis, and ABO blood group.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: There was a higher incidence of blood
transfusions and renal transplant rejection in HDP with IWB. This study
supports the importance of transplantation antigens as factors in the
development of IWB.
